Apparently a Newfoundland 50 cent has the same effect as a Lucky Loonie
In the Olympics of 2010 in Vancouver the icemakers put in a "Lucky Loonie" in a strategic place in the ice of the hockey-rink - for luck for the Canadian teams (both men and women won the olympic gold). When that was revealed -afterwards - the US team was not very pleased about that.

The homecrowd naturally also wanted the best of luck to team Gushue:
Please let Gushue, the pride of the Rock
and his team leave us all in a shock,
a positive one
'cause it sure would be fun
if they win out of good Skills - and luck :-)
A couple of guys among the icemakers spent a little extra effort in placing an old Newfoundland 50 cent (from before 1949 when Newfoundland became a part of Canada).
"Lucky Looney" for any event!
- As an old Newfoundland 50 cent.
Though the looney is twice
50 cent - in the ice
it for certain was money well spent!
Please read Evan Kearleys own words on how this evolved - followed by 4 pictures of the Newfoundland 50 cent from it place in the ice to the hand of Brad Gushue:
We first got the idea after talking about the lucky loonie at the olympics. Then I thought it would be a neat idea to use a Newfoundland coin since Newfoundland had its own currency at one point. We knew that sheet B was where the final was gonna be played, and had originally intended to place one on each end behind the hacks. The head ice maker didn't like the look of them so we removed them before the final flood. As we were putting ths carpet and boards down me and another member of the ice crew decided we were gonna put it in anyways and placed it as close to the sheet as we could without it being seen. We hoped it would bring some good luck, and the rest was history. I guess it worked lol.
It sure did, Evan - and it´s always nice "with a little help from my Friends"......
